England’s historic villages are more than just pretty backdrops – they’re living communities with centuries of stories behind them. High House
Braunston, Rutland
This Grade II Listed ironstone house sits in the heart of Braunston, an incredibly popular village surrounded by Rutland’s rolling hills. It might be a village house, but the home has large reception rooms – including a 25ft drawing room – and there’s over 3.5 acres of land. Whilst High House leaves little to be desired, there’s scope for extension and improvement should the next owner wish, with planning permission in place for the thatched garage to be converted and a new garage to be built. Thanks to its prime position within the village, The Blue Bell pub is less than a five minute walk away, and you can drive to the market town of Oakham in under 10 minutes.

Park Gate
Elham, Kent
Dating from the 1400s, Park Gate is a grand country house that is the ideal home for someone wanting to be surrounded by history. Owned by the Secretary of State for War during WWII, the home was visited by Sir Winston Churchill and today features gun emplacements in the garden as a reminder of the property’s historical connections. Inside, there’s plenty of impressive period features – from inglenook fireplaces and exposed floorboards, to timber beams. Beyond the almost six acres of gardens, you’re situated in the Elham Valley here and on the outskirts of the village of Elham, with useful everyday amenities at your fingertips.

4 Fulmer Place
Fulmer, Buckinghamshire
Found in a Grade II Listed property, this two-bedroom apartment provides you with the grandeur of living in a country home but on a manageable scale. The home has lovely features, including a kitchen/dining room with soaring ceiling heights and a fireplace in the living room. The large sash windows also offer fantastic views across Fulmer Place’s seven acres of communal gardens.

Chevers Farm
Stonham Aspal, Suffolk
Just a couple of miles away from Debenham, a wonderfully historic village in the heart of mid-Suffolk, is Chevers Farm – a Grade II Listed farmhouse. The home has been carefully updated to combine modern touches with the original period details – just look at the fantastic timber-framed breakfast room that sits alongside the kitchen’s exposed beams. The six-bedroom house is big, but if you’d like more, there’s a three-bedroom converted barn nearby that is available via separate negotiation.

High Gables
Fulmer, Buckinghamshire
High Gables sits on the edge of Fulmer, a popular and celebrated village which has won Buckinghamshire’s Best Kept Village competition on several occasions. The country home has lots to offer: an EPC ‘A’ rating for fantastic energy efficiency, a detached two-bedroom cottage, and over nine acres of parkland-style grounds.
